Magazines, ads, furniture, clothes, movies – basically anything you can see with your eyes were designed.

There was an individual behind the concept who sketched it out with their creativity and with the purpose to communicate and evoke an emotion in you. From text, colour, shape, angles, material and the list goes on; these are things a designer has to think about from scratch to finish.

The Design industry is seen as a branch of the Art industry. Most people would argue Design is fast and upcoming because of the demand it has coming from society to stretch our imaginations. We now have the tools to create real life-like structures that puts objects into a new perspective.

I’ve had the chance to discuss with designer John Mark Vicente (jmvdesign) about his journey on becoming a designer and a personal reflection. jmvdesign graduated from Emily Carr University upon finishing his Communication Design Program. The program has honed his expertise in Industrial and Communication Design. His skills have allowed him to do freelance and work with clients to apply his various design principles to explore innovative ways of informing and entertaining diverse audiences with different needs and interests. Today, his portfolio showcases an impressive variety of designs for what he is best known for, cars.

Like most careers, it is usually picked up as a hobby first and then developed into a passion. jmvdesign started to draw at a young age inspired by his father and older brother. At first he started with drawing out cartoons such as Street Fighter, Marvel superheros or Ghostbusters. It wasn’t until later in high school that he met some influential figures that inspired him to pursue his passion and start taking art and design seriously. Yet he admits that he has always been a ‘gear head’ and had an interest for anything related to automobiles. He started to modify his own car since high school and became fond of the automotive design industry. Then it clicked for him, cars and design.

What separates a job and a career? A job you are looking at the bottom line, the pay. Yet a career we have so many more ambitions. For jmvdesign, this is not his job. This is his career. Mainly he wants to communicate his ideals and personality through his work. Whether its expressing masculine features in an automobile sculpture or rearranging typographic elements to form a narrative poster design, design in his life is the expression of his persona.

For an individual who has seen countless models of cars, it is hard to have one personal favourite. Yet jmvdesign dubs The Bugatti Veyron by Volkswagen his favourite. This vehicle is the fastest production car in the world and the icing on the top is its advance technology, sophisticated aesthetics and exclusive appeal.

For anyone, having an inspirational figure to admire keeps us on our toes and challenged for more to achieve to those levels. Randy Rodriguez, a car designer for Nissan who penned the current Nissan 370Z design, was one of the influential figures who showed jmvdesign the plethora of opportunities in design. What inspired him the most was the way Randy took the time to critique his artistic level, taught him some fundamentals of automotive design and gave him advice to guide him to make the right career choice.

Sometimes in our career choice we are lucky to build a following where others appreciate what we do publicly. This is the case for designer jmvdesign, a video found on Youtube created by a fan with more than 500,000 hits:

Design is not a 9-5 job. You are constantly observing your surroundings to extract inspiration and ideas. It is a balance between exercising your artistic side with the demands of a client. As our world develops more and more technology, designers have a vast choice of how they can create. Now you feel like you know a little bit more of design and the workings behind it. Even if you don’t know the exact techniques or what you are looking for, you can still admire someone’s work by feeling that awe it creates in you.
